Wandering The Streets Of Rome

Our train pulled into Rome…and it was dirty. It is so sad to me that these places that hold so much history are the dirtiest. Graffiti was everywhere and the streets outside of the train station were lined with bums hassling everyone for money.

John and I had yet to find a place to stay, so we walked the streets looking for one. This first one we came to was pretty close to the train station but it didn’t look bad. So we went inside to find out if they had vacancy. The man told us it would be 125 euro, so we said thanks but no thanks…and so he asked us to name the price. John said 70 euro and he told us that was fine. He gave us the key and said if we liked it to pay later that day. We walked up there with a wired feeling and decided this seemed a bit shady. When we walked back down and told the man we would eat lunch and think about it he yelled, “NO, no deal for you, you just missed it.” So with that we grabbed out luggage and walked on.
We finally found a place closer to the colosseum. We dropped out stuff off and left to see the city. Our first stop was near the Forum. We found ruins that were still being excavated. We walked on to pass many beautiful monuments on the way to the coluseum.

It was funny how sidetracked we got on the way to the colosseum. John would see ruins that looked cool and say, “lets go up here.” So we did some circles before we got to the colosseum. The colosseum was amazing, especially with the lights filling in the Roman arches. We came we saw we conquered, now we were hungry for some good food; we took the metro to the Hard Rock Café.

The next day we went to the prison that is believed to have housed Peter and Paul. We walked through the Forum, took a tour of the colosseum, WALKED to Vatican City (that is a long walk) and looked in St. Peters Basilica. We went the extra mile and walked to the top of St. Peters Basilica…after we were both drenched in sweat we made it, took a picture, and walked back down.

Our train for Munich left at 9:45 p.m., so we began to make our way back to the hotel to get our luggage and hopefully a shower. Well, we got our luggage but not a shower. They were full, but they told us the train station had showers. So we took a taxi to the train station, got inside and followed the shower signs. We arrived to a line for the bathroom and a woman (who we assumed worked there) flailing her arms telling us “NO NO SHOWER”. So we were out of luck and in a lot of sweaty sticky clothes.

We went to the grocery store and bought food to eat while we waited for our train to arrive. After people watching, I began to get nervous about who would be on our train so we prayed for the Lord to give us nice couchette roommates. Our train arrived and we got on. We found our car and saw this pleasant looking couple playing Yahtzee. They were a young German couple that had just finished their 4-week honeymoon, and were headed back home. We chatted for a while until we all called it a night and went to sleep.
